The development of Indonesia’s national curriculum has undergone continuous transformation shaped by social dynamics, political shifts, and evolving educational demands. From the 1947 curriculum to the current Merdeka Curriculum, these changes reflect the nation’s ongoing efforts to align educational practices with societal needs and advances in knowledge. This study presents a Systematic Literature Review aimed at providing a comprehensive analysis of the evolution of Indonesia’s curriculum by examining its defining characteristics, pedagogical orientations, driving factors of change, and emerging patterns across historical periods. Using thematic synthesis, relevant academic literature was analyzed to identify key trends. The review highlights four major findings: the significant influence of political and ideological contexts on curriculum direction, the paradigm shift from teacher-centered to student-centered learning, the increasing emphasis on competencies and 21st-century skills, and the trend toward modernization marked by decentralization and the Merdeka Belajar policy. This study offers a holistic understanding of the trajectory of Indonesia’s curriculum reforms and provides essential recommendations for developing future curricula that are adaptive, humanistic, and aligned with global educational needs.
